Cherishing the symphony as much as the opera, Marc Minkowski was inconsolable that Rameau, one of his favourite musicians, had never tried his hand at the first. The genial Jean-Philippe had excuses : the genre did not exist, at least not in its modern form, which gives a large orchestral piece a structure that is obvious to listeners. The masters of the early eighteenth century barely dared to write suites, often oriented by dance movements, whose composite character would be rejected by the fathers of classicism. Faithful to Rameau’s visionary elevation, this Nouvelle Symphonie (opus 2, following the success of a first version), greedily picks out the most beautiful orches-tral pages that punctuate the musician’s operas and ballets, and offers us a journey that is not directly narrative, but neverthe-less perfectly coherent, guiding our own imagination without restricting it. And as this orchestral goldsmith cherished voices, the one of the baritone Thomas Dolié adds to our pleasure.
